Painting Mediums and Preparations

Safflower Oil

Compared with linseed oil, safflower oil has greater clarity, is less prone to yellowing and is slow drying. In the manufacture of oil colours, safflower oil is used as the binder for white pigments. It is also used as the binder for fast drying pigments, to retard their drying rate. When added to oil colours, darkens less than linseed oil.

Rabbit Glue
, in Grains

Fine, light coloured grains of rabbit glue. Mix 1 part of dry glue with 15 parts water. Leave to soak for 1 hour, then warm through on double boiler to form clear solution of warm glue. Add a further 15 parts of water to create a thin, flexible glue. Apply while just warm, to size canvas or board, prior to application of Oil Ground. For best results apply two thin coats of rabbit glue. Wait until completely dry before overpainting with Oil Ground.

Stand Oil

Stand oil is a polymerised form of linseed oil. Stand oil dries faster than normal linseed oil, is relatively more flexible and dries with less yellowing. As a consequence, it can be used as a painting medium, added to oil colours to create more gloss and richness of colour. The thick consistency can be reduced by dilution with turpentine as required. Stand oil can also be mixed 1:1 with Damar Varnish, to create an extra glossy yet flexible paint medium for adding to oil colours.

Kerotix
- Wax-Resin Painting Medium for Oil Colours

Kerotix is a special formulation of damar resin and natural beeswax, in the form of a buttery paste. It can be added to oil colours in small amounts (e.g. up to 10-15% kerotix to oil colour), to give a more pasty consistency. When added to oil colour, the resultant paint will be slightly more matt than usual.
Kerotix can also be applied as a varnish over thoroughly dried oil paintings. The wax paste is carefully applied with a lint free cotton cloth, then gently polished to a light sheen.
