Painting from Landscape: Historic Watercolour Palette
The Sibillini mountains were often included in Grand Tours of Italy during the 1700s and 1800s. During this period artists made sketches on site, to be worked up into complete paintings at home in the studio. The historic watercolour workshop affords participants the opportunity to prepare their own paints by hand, using antique pigments, according to the palette of early English watercolour painters such as Turner, Towne and Ruskin. Many of these colours are derived from plant, animal and earth sources, along with early manufactured pigments such as prussian blue, zinc white and cobalt blue. During the workshop, we will prepare a full palette of colours, for outdoor use.The workshop will consider different types of brushes and watercolour painting mediums. The types of paper available to the early watercolour artists tended to be based on flax rather than cotton fibres, providing a thinner, yet more robust paper sheet. A selection of similar modern papers will be available for experimentation and use. Le Marche is renowned for its historic paper mills, thanks to its clear mountain rivers which flow through classic limestone valleys. A visit to local papermaker Natan Kaaren can be arranged to look at traditional paper-making techniques.. The workshop will include time for painting at a number of interesting locations.
