A week of intensive oil painting, referencing the dramatic landscape setting of Monte San Martino in the high Tenna valley, Macerata Province, le Marche, Italy.
Participants will have five solid days of painting, with artist
Pip Seymour as guide and co-ordinator. The aim of the week is to create a number of individual oil paintings which relate to the immediate landscape. During the week, the group will be encouraged to share ideas and comments on the work produced, with the overall aim to encourage a positive working environment.
At the end of the week, a selection of the paintings (finished or in progress) will be shown in the town art gallery, in the main piazza of Monte San Martino.
This event will be open to the public and a small reception will be organised, with refreshments.
The week is open to all artists, regardless of experience or background. Although, there will be no formal tuition offered, it is hoped that the group will interact and exchange ideas and possibilities as the week progresses.

All materials (paint/brushes/canvases) are included in the Symposium fee, along with local transport, accommodation, breakfast, transfer to Ancona airport.
Lunch and evening meal will be payable during the week: most days the group will dine at the local restaurant at a reduced rate. A similar arrangement will be made for lunch.
Because of its elevated position, Monte San Martino offers extensive views into the surrounding landscape. As a consequence, most of the painting activity will take place in and around the village, although a number of short excursions can be made as and when requested by the group.
Six places are available for each week on a first come first served basis.
To view photographs of the village and landscape around Monte San Martino, please visit our website:

Studio for Paint Technique

Established in 2001, the Studio for Paint Technique is a purpose-built workshop designed to facilitate a greater understanding of painting materials and techniques for artists. The studio and house are located in the village of Monte San Martino, Macerata Province, Marche, Italy. Artists are accommodated in Monte San Martino, the studio and house being a 18C Almshouse, adjacent to the Church of Monte San Martino, in the most elevated part of the village. The studio programme is open to all artists.

The Studio for Paint Technique is co-ordinated by artist and writer, Pip Seymour.

The studio programme is designed to give artists an insight as to the working properties of different paint media, with the broad aim of encouraging good practice among artists. Through the studio programme, individual artists are enabled to expand their knowledge of specific areas of paint technique and to try out materials which in other circumstances they may not have access to.
The studio is equipped with a complete stock of raw materials for paint-making: pigments, binders, waxes, resins, oils, solvents, etc. In addition a full stock of oil colours, watercolour and gouache paints and painting supports are available for use. All material costs are included in the studio fees.

Pip Seymour
is a painter, who has also written a number of books on painting materials and techniques, including "The Artist's Handbook", "Paint Theory, Paint Practice", "A Short Book About Oil Painting" and "Watercolour Painting"[link]. He lectures on painting materials and techniques at a number of institutions, including Camberwell University of the Arts, London, the Prince's Drawing Studio, London, The Lakeland Arts Trust, Kendal, The Colour Museum, Bradford.
